Volkswagen Bik.e Concept: Green Mobility Anytime, Anywhere

The green movement has already invaded the auto industry. These days, all the newest automotive innovations seem to revolve around being “green”. Hybrid vehicles have suddenly become the new trend. It’s not surprising, then, to see manufacturers also turn their attention to two-wheel mobility when it comes to their green innovations. Volkswagen has done just that with its introduction of the Volkswagen Bik.e concept at the Auto China 2010.

The Volkswagen Bik.e is an electric bicycle powered by a motor that you only need to charge. It looks like all other normal bicycles you’ll see in the streets today, save for the absence of a pedal. It’s ideal for use in urban areas, as a substitute to your car whenever you find the need to park it somewhere far from your actual destination (blame the increasing number of vehicles and the limited parking space available), or if you just want a ride that will help you maneuver easily through traffic (all thanks to the Bik.e’s small size). Featuring a top speed of 12.5 miles per hour, the said bicycle can travel up to 12.5 miles.

This new Volkswagen product packs together environmental friendliness, practicality, and style into a sleek innovation that you can store in your spare tire compartment. When not in use, you can fold it down easily into a flat disc, place it in the compartment for your spare tire, and then carry it with you wherever you go.

The Bik.e is the very first two-wheel drive from Volkswagen. Right now, it’s still just a concept innovation, though hopefully, it will be in the market soon. If you want something similar, you can find an electric bicycle at Amazon.

Volkswagen L1 Concept Car

Concept cars never fail to excite people. Having these every now and then makes us see what’s in store for us in the near future. Whether cars of the future are getting personal and for single user only or it could be getting bigger and bigger and heading towards mass public transportation for better economy. Well, whichever it could be, the L1 concept car from Volkswagen definitely is for the former.

db2009au01460_medium_optThe L1 was built with a central concept of efficiency. It is actually touted as the one liter car since it can run on a liter of gasoline for around 100km or 62 miles. That will equate to about 240mpg which would be a heaven for every driver! This efficiency comes with the price of being able to just accommodate the driver and a passenger sitting on the back just like a pilot having a co-pilot on his back. The design is much of a sleek and modern bullet and is low, long and quite slim.

The whole car just weighs 838 pounds thanks to the carbon fiber construct that the body has allowing little weight with maximum strength. The prototype was actually available already in 2002 and was driven by the general manager of VW when he went to the shareholders’ meeting. Now, VW said that the L1 is close to production and is expected to be getting out of the factories by 2013.

Until then, the our best choice for fuel economy would be through the use of hybrid cars. Browse over them at Blitzerz.
