Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro

While to world of cellphone technology is heated with smartphones, it is primarily dominated by the Apple iPhone that remains pretty much a bestseller even with other phones throwing rocks at it. There are also others who play it out in the market such as RIM’s BlackBerry, Google’s Android, and Palm’s Pre. While for the past year, Sony Ericsson seem to have just watched on the bleachers, they have changed their attack plan with numerous smatrphones such as the Xperia line dominated by an Android OS and Windows Mobile. Now, Symbian OS isn’t dropped out of the game just yet with its presence in the Vivaz Pro.

The Vivaz Pro features the first smartphone from Sony Ericsson to have the 720p HD video shooting capability. The 5-megapixel camera with flash has continuous autofocus so pictures always come out crisp and vivid. It also has a slide-out keyboard that makes it easy to compose an e-mail or sending a text message to friends or business clients. The embedded Facebook application allows easy access to your account without even opening the web browser.

There is no significant built-in memory but this is compensated by the included 8gb micro-SD card. If that is still not enough, the phone can also read 16gb micro-SD cards. The 3.2″ capacitive touch screen provides accurate response same as on the iPhone. Though Symbian OS hasn’t been really popular for touch screen phones (except for Nokia), the interface and true user experience on this one is yet to be tested.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini

Staying on its path to be the leading premium handset maker, Sony Ericsson announced the X10 Mini even prior to the release of the original Xperia X10. It is not surprising anyway that new phones are being announced quite frequently these days especially that the Mobile World Congress is happening in Spain. The X10 Mini brandishes its smaller profile but retained key features that users would want in a smartphone.

The most noticeable difference is the 2.5″ screen which came a lot from being 4″ on the X10. This is very significant considering that the device will be heavily dependent on a touch screen interface. Just think if texting on a 3.2″ is already hard for you, what more pain will the smaller screen bring? Although it uses an alphanumeric virtual keypad similar to a traditional phone, navigating the system would still be hard. Moreover, the smaller screen size would mean less viewing area for pictures and videos.

Anyhow, the X10 Mini still has good features and hardware to back the small profile. It is run by a Qualcomm MSM7227 600Mhz processor with 128mb internal memory. The operating system uses Android 1.6 with Timescape UI where all communication items can be seen such as emails, messages, Facebook updates, tweets, missed calls, etc so that you don’t have to open different applications just to view them. You can choose between connecting to the internet via WiFi or the fast 3G HSPA network. There is a 5megapixel camera, A-GPS, and FM radio in case you need it.

The main selling point of the X10 Mini is its size. Real world experience is yet to be tested.
