This Week’s Picks: Of Bionic Hands and Aspiring Gloves

This week we stumbled upon another technological breakthrough in robotics, a mechanical five-fingered hand that grasps objects. Then in our search for more wonders in the land of digits and palms (not the PDA), we encountered a robotic hand wannabe.

RAPHaEL

robotic-handBe it a hefty tin can filled with processed meat, or a delicate and breakable egg — RAPHaEL can take it on. The College of Engineering of Virginia Tech created a Robotic Air Powered Hand with Elastic Ligaments, or RAPHaEL. This bionic wonder is a fully detailed hand that is operated by a compressor air tank. This is the unique aspect of this design, as it doesn’t use motors or other devices. The pressure of RAPHaEL’s grasp depends on the compressor’s air pressure. The individual fingers are guided by microcontroller commands. This makes the design impressively precise.

Xtensor Gamer Hand Exercise

xtensor_hand_exerciserWell it’s not as brilliant as what the engineers of Virginia Tech came up with, but it’s definitely something new. The Xtensor Gamer Hand Exerciser claims that after a couple of minutes with this, um, glove — then your gaming prowess will be better. If athletes do warm up exercises before they train, then why not gamers too? This glove is like the gym for PC gamers.  Basically, this glove will stretch and train the ligaments and muscles that you use in constant mouse-clicking. It claims to prevent gaming cramps.

It’s worth a try. The Xtensor Gamer Hand Exercise is available here. For what it’s worth, the glove looks pretty hardcore.

iRobot Looj

iRobot Looj

iRobot Looj is the real thing and safe way on clean your gutters. Your gutter needs maintenance to avoid water damage, overspills and ice dams. Also an added precaution to avoid dirty gutters creates a breeding ground for carpenter ants, mosquitoes and other pests.

This saves your life from falling on the ground while reaching over your gutter and lessens your work of climbing and repositioning a ladder several times. Also reduce your burden of carrying so many tools that are too heavy that may cause you to kiss the ground. It makes your gutter cleaning fast and easier.

Imagine, it cleans your gutter in just minutes not an hour. And if you think gutter cleaning is a dirty and unpleasant job, this iRobot Looj will replace you from your anguish. This is the only and easiest way to keep your gutters free-flowing all year round. Plus you only use remote control to manage the cleaning.

Its Wireless remote control has a 75-ft. range, moves the Looj forwards and backwards, and changes the rotational direction of the auger to ensure complete debris removal. Looj attaches to an included belt clip to free up your hands and make it easier for you to climb a ladder. It uses a high power, rechargeable battery pack.

Search and pick them up in a minute, deal here.

Roomba iRobot 410 Vacuum Cleaning Robot

Roomba iRobot 410 Vacuum Cleaner

Roomba iRobot 410 Vacuum Cleaner

The Roomba iRobot 410 Vacuum Cleaning Robot is a vacuum robot then cleans your floor routinely. This robot is effective and intelligent in cleaning your house. It has a powerful vacuum as well as counter-rotating brush that help in eliminating dust, dirt, and debris accumulated by carpets.

Roomba is very convenient and user-friendly; it has a simple step to follow. Just press the clean button and there you go, it automatically adjusts itself and determines the size of the room and also adjusts from wood, tile, linoleum, and low-to-medium pile carpet. It really manages itself to help you and give you comfort for only seating and watching it cleans your rooms.

It uses three-stage cleaning system with a wide cleaning path that operates with counter-rotating brushes that scrape large debris into the dustbin and utilize vacuum to pick up fine particles, grime and pet fur. It is possible through integrated sensors that detect dirt and allows roomba to perform well in a specific area.

Its edge-cleaning spinning side brush, combined with wall-following technology, removes dirt and debris from the base of walls, from corners, and other hard-to-reach places. The vacuum’s stasis sensor detects when it’s stuck and utilize pre-programmed escape routines to free it.

Feel free to check this vacuum, maybe you make deal after.

A “Trauma Pod” A Robot in a Robotic trauma room save Soldiers lives.

The robotic technology used to perform a totally unmanned surgical procedure is their major hurdle. A human surgeon will be the actual conductor from a remote location, utilizing a system of surgical manipulators through wireless connection. A level of automation is needed to assist the surgeon during all phases of any surgical procedures. There will also be a robotic scrub nurse available to lend assistance or care for other patients.

A supply robot system SDS (Supply Dispensing System) is included in the “Trauma Pod”. It will dispense medications and supplies, as well as dispose of used supplies in a medical waste container. General Dynamics Robotic Systems have come up with several plans for this idea, which include SCMS (Supply Chain Management System) to assist with issuing and restocking orders.

SRI has the reputation to create and produce this technological idea. In the late 1980’s it was their da Vinci prototype that was approved by the FDA for use in general laparoscopic surgery. The da Vinci project was originally funded by the Army with the idea of a robotic system for battlefield medical assistance. They expect a prototype to be in effect in the next year hopefully speeding up the application of this needed technology.

Black-I Robotics Landshark DUCGV

Black-I Robotics Landshark DUCGV (unmanned crossover ground vehicles) are faster, stronger, and more affordable than most robots on the market today. The design has been recognized for its use in military operations and has been awarded an $800,000.00 contract from the U.S. Governments Technical Support Working Group (TSWG). They plan on developing and testing low-cost, robust, and mid-size unmanned ground vehicles that can be used for defense and homeland security operations.

Black-I Robotics utilizes (COTS) commercial-off-the-shelf in conjunction with propriety hardware and open source (JAUS) software. This technologically scalable core robot chassis makes it adaptable to several major markets. Applications can be used to assist First Responders, military and non-military EOD, SWAT, hazmat, physical security, firefighting, search and rescue, reconnaissance, battlefield casualty extraction, surveillance and target acquisition. With integrated software technology Black-I Robotics intends to create the most adaptable and affordable unmanned ground vehicles on the market.

Brian Hart founded Black-I Robotics Inc and incorporated it in 2006 in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. He was a senior executive in pharmacy automation when his son, 20 year old PFC John Hart, was killed in action in an unarmored Humvee near Taza, Iraq, in October 2003. He left a Fortune 50 Pharmaceutical company in 2004 to push Congress for safer military vehicles. His development of the Landshark DUCGV is in hopes that there will be less military causalities and less families suffering from that type of loss.
