You want to take your tunes on the road, but headphones don’t always cut it, and even the smallest home speakers and receivers/amplifiers aren’t portable. Good thing, technology has come to the rescue by introducing portable speakers that sound a lot better than the tinny models you might remember from the Walkman days.

They plug into iPods, MP3 players, and laptops’ headphone jacks, with sound that can easily fill a small to medium-size room. And one of these portable speakers is the Orbit USB [iML237]. Weighing in at less than six ounces, this powerful little speaker is perfect for the frequent traveller.

Product Summary:

The good:

Compact and attractively designed, this ultra-portable USB speaker provides surprisingly big sound and the convenience of plug-and-play USB connectivity for netbooks and laptops. The circular shape provides a 360-degree sound field and the retractable stand aims the audio wherever wanted. Built to survive tough travel conditions, the Orbit USB includes a stylish neoprene case with hook-on carabineer as well as tangle-free cord storage.

The bad:

It is more expensive than the previous Orbit. It lacks volume control on the speaker and it distorts at higher volumes. But the very depressing thing about this speaker is that it can only be used with your laptop or PC. So if you’re looking for a portable speaker for your iPod or MP3 player, remove the Orbit USB iML237 on your list.

Bottom line:

While its $50 list price is high, the Orbit USB iML237 portable speaker is an attractive option for laptop users who want a compact travel speaker that outperforms their internal laptop speakers.

The bad:

Bottom line:

The Logitech S315i Rechargeable Speaker is a good choice for iPod/iPhone owners who are constantly on the go.

This, is a new twist to something old – expandable speakers. The Veho 360 pops open to make the sounds coming from its mouse like speakers squeaks to deliver a lion’s roar that can continue for 7 hours! The internal battery is charged every time it is plugged in a USB port which is very much common nowadays. Aside from working with standard 3.5mm music player jacks, it can also work with various proprietary connections of cellphones like mini USB for some HTC devices, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung ports.

You might ask “how small is this that we are talking about anyway?”. This portable speaker is small enough to fit in the palm of your hands or 5×3.5cm and 5×5.5cm when fully extended. That extra 2cm of resonance space makes all the difference. I can definitely recommend this thing to be an important add-on in your laptop bag when your laptop doesn’t really pack a punch in the sound department or for presentations that need some sounds on or in your school bag to impress your friends on how techie you are having such a small speakers for its loud sound.
