Dell Inspiron Mini 10 – Small in Size but Great in Features

The first mini notebook was released by Asus — notably the Asus Eee PC [though Palm contends this with their Foleo in 2007, but that's up for debate - ed], so Asus had the early advantage in the ultra-portable race. But it never stopped Dell from releasing their set of mini notebooks. After the Inspiron Mini 9 was launched, Dell has unveiled their latest addition to their mini notebook line, the Inspiron Mini 10. Though it will most likely be costlier than any Inspiron Mini, we are sure that it’s worth the price. It is more advanced than the Inspiron Mini 9 and it offers more features compared to the Inspiron Mini 12. And unlike these two, the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 is said to provide a better typing experience because the keyboard has an expanded size.

You shouldn’t miss this 2.86-pound Dell Inspiron Mini 10 that is offered in six different colors: black, green, white, blue, pink, and red. Dell also stated that it will be available in 5 artist designs. Dell Inspiron Mini 10 comes with a 10.1-inch 16:9 HD 720p display and is going to be powered by Intel’s newest Atom platform, a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor.

Other features include a built-in TV tuner (USB accessory), WiFi 802.11n, GPS, 3G WWAN, Bluetooth, multi-touch trackpad, 3-n-1 card reader, and webcam. Battery options include 3-cell and 6-cell versions. No specific details on what RAM, storage and OS options will be used for this new netbook though but we are expecting 1GB and 80GB HDD which are both upgradeable.

LG X-120 Netbook Debut

lg-x120

LG is on a roll! We just featured their futuristic phone with the transparent slider keypad, now they’re sporting a sleek new netbook with 3G capability.

The recent Mobile World Congress proved that LG is a dark horse in this mobile competition, and they’re definitely a force to be reckoned with.

For mobile warriors, the most noteworthy feature of the LG X-120 is its “Smart-On” interface. All your frequently used programs are stored as a widget on the desktop. Upon powering up this netbook, all those widgets are instantly accessible to you, even if the OS hasn’t booted up yet. That’s great news for the impatient cows out there (me included).

The company boasts of easy connectivity with the LG X-120. Its Smart-Link technology allows this notebook to seamlessly hook up to any PC or electronic device via USB, that makes for effortless file transfer.

Here’s more of its notable features in a glance:

  • 3G HSPA connection
  • 160GB hard drive
  • Weight: 1.2 kg
  • Battery life: 3.5 hours for the 3-cell battery; 7 hours for the 6-cell battery
  • 1.3 megapixel webcam

If you’re on the lookout for a sleek, stylish, and user-friendly netbook, the LG X120 may just be your best bet. This item ships out in Europe next month (March 2009), but there’s not official word out yet regarding its US availability. So hold tight Geekies! We’ll be sure to let you know the moment this bubblegum hits our coastline.

ASUS EeePC 1000HE

1000he

Netbook lovers rejoice! The ASUS EeePC 1000He seems to be another upgrade amidst the sheer amount of mediocre netbooks in the market.

The 1000HE model of the EeePC line is a very much welcome upgrade due to its looooong battery life of 9.5 hours according to their test using BatteryMark. The rated battery duration specifies that it is on power saving mode, 40% brightness, no Bluetooth, no WiFi, and the camera has been disabled. Usually, these rated hours by the manufacturers aren’t really the same in real life conditions. But even though you could manage to squeeze 7 hours of usage time, it is still nice for a netbook. Gone are the days that netbooks only mean portable due to their size and weight as they only last for about 2 and half hours like regular laptops, and they have to be connected to a power outlet again. With the increased battery life, portability now includes being away from an outlet. Also, it seems that the 1000HE doesn’t suffer from an extra hump below as can be seen in the photo.

Processing power is also one of the things that this netbook showcases. It has an Intel Atom N280 processor which is faster than the N270 processor. It is also equipped with a Super Hybrid Engine (SHE) technology that serves like a “nitro” button for PC. It gives the netbook extra power with a simple press. It can also tone down the processor to lengthen the battery life.

The ASUS EeePC 1000HE is already available for preorder at Amazon for just $374($25 instant preorder discount included).

10″ Acer Aspire One

10inch-aspire

The netbook market is expected to grow this year as the demand for cheaper products get higher and higher due to the financial crunch. Acer, a leader manufacturer in the PC market who introduced the original Acer One last year, released another model that is bigger and better.

The new 10 inch Acer Aspire One is a lot better due to the larger screen(of course). Up from the previous 8.9 inches, this bigger screen has a resolution of 1024×600 which is great for surfing websites without scrolling sideways, and it is LED back lit too! The trackpad is also a lot better since it is the same as the one available in regular laptops instead of the original’s awkward design.

Speaking of design, the 10″ aspire maintained the clean streamlined look that says modern and fast! The palm rest is also done with brushed metal that is good in preventing finger prints on it.

Acer promises 7 hours on its 6 cell battery which is good for ultra portable computing. 160GB hard drive capacity is one of its best asset for people who want to bring everything around with them.

Aside from that, an all-in-one card reader, Bluetooth, WiFi, and optional 3G wireless techonology is present for unlimited internet connectivity. The 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor with up to 2GB DDR2 RAM combo is very capable to run its Windows XP Home built-in operating system, productivity suite and multimedia applications as well.

The 10″ Aspire One weighs 1.18kg. Not really the lightest of them all but trying one in real life, it is very handy! This netbook is expected to be priced at $399 with color variants available to black, red and white.

MSI Wind U100-432US 10-Inch Netbook

We have reviewed a lot of netbooks in this website and so far, the quality of these netbooks is nothing short of amazing. Maintaining a “netbook size” while not compromising its usability is always a factor in finding the right unit for you. As the old adage goes: “Big things come in small packages”, and the MSI Wind is here to prove that:

MSI Wind U100-420US

At 2.6 pounds (that’s almost one-thirds the weight of a regular laptop), the MSI Wind is as light as it is compact. WIND stands for “Wi-Fi Network Device” but I would have deduced that it’s called the “Wind” for being lightweight. Running on an Intel Atom 1.6GHz Processor, nothing bad can be said about its speed, although the maximum you can upgrade the RAM is 2GB. It also comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera and a microphone, perfect for video chatting and the like.

Now let’s talk about connectivity: Aside from Wi-Fi, the Wind is compatible with Bluetooth as well. It has 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals, 1 headphone/line-in and 1 microphone/line-out, a VGA video output (15-pin, D-Sub), a 4-in-1 memory card reader, compatible with Secure Digital (SD), MultiMediaCard (MMC), Memory Stick, and Memory Stick Pro and a Fast Ethernet port for a 10/100 connection. Design-wise, from some reviews, most users have noted that the screen is very clear but not overly bright so as to cause temporary blindness. One major complaint however is the “tippiness” issue, which is not really that big of a problem if you will be using your netbook on a table top instead of your lap.

Design flaws aside, the MSI Wind has more pros than cons, and at $429.99, it’s not as expensive as higher-end netbooks out in the market. Bottomline is, you get what you pay for and for what it’s worth, you have to agree that the “Wind” is a cool name for a netbook, right?

See if the Wind will blow you away…

or buy the MSI Wind at bargain prices, it’s up to you.
