Ultra is a prefix usually reserved for those that surpass the norm, the extreme, or those with the highest degree of quality or characteristics. This holds true to Ultrabooks, a category of laptops reserved for the thinnest, lightest, most energy efficient, and of course – fastest. So when Lenovo categorized their latest U300 laptops as Ultrabooks, you know you’re in for some of the best features in Intel mobile computing. The new Lenovo U300s is slim and light – at 0.6 in. thin and 2.91 lb. (including the 4-cell battery); this is one of the thinnest and lightest laptops out there, even by the Ultrabook standards. A major contributing factor to its ultrathin and ultra light design is the use of minimalist one-piece aluminum shell. The full-size keyboard is breathable and uses an Intel Cooling Technology to allow the system to run at cooler temperatures by letting the airflow through the keyboard. The intelligent glass touchpad has a responsive multi-touch functions allowing easy scroll, zoom, and rotate.
On the audio side, its two SRS Premium Surround Sound certified speakers can deliver clear and crisp stereo sounds. Lenovo used a VibrantView glossy LED-backlit 200-nit panel for a screen. This screen may not look very rich or vibrant when used outside or in a bright area but it should not raise any concern though under normal light conditions – the U300s’ 1366 x 768 pixel resolution is detailed enough to play 720p HD movies.
When it comes to performance, the Lenovo U300s’ starter CPU speaks for itself: Intel Core i5-2467M which boasts 2 cores and 4 threads clocked at 1.6GHz. It also has 4GB of RAM and a 128 or 256GB SATA SSD. The starting hardware specs of the U300 may not be the most powerful but it should more than satisfy the needs of casual or business users. Connectivity wise, Lenovo included a USB 3.0 port, HDMI, Bluetooth, and an Intel Wireless network card. The battery life of the U300s is also quite impressive; it can last up to 8 hours using a 4-cell Lithium Polymer battery.
