Kindle Fire – From e-Book Reader to Next Generation Tablet

Bring on the heat! The new Amazon Kindle Fire tablet just redefined what it means to be the hottest new gadget around. This 7-inch e-book reader-slash-tablet is a far cry from the original Kindle. For starters, as compared to the previous Kindle’s monochromatic E Ink Pearl Display, Kindle Fire features a 1024 x 600 colored multi-touch screen sporting 16 million colors, anti-reflective coating, and In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology for a more vibrant display and wider viewing angle. Its screen is no Gorilla but it’s chemically hardened to be 20 times more rigid and 30 times harder than conventional plastic for added durability and scratch resistance. Furthermore, the latest Amazon Kindle is no longer just limited to reading e-books and other electronic fine prints. Like all modern tablets, it can also play video and audio files, run games and other applications, surf the web, process and port emails, and stream popular movies and TV shows.

Amazon Kindle Fire is a complete information and entertainment hub powered simply by touch. Its simple interface allows user to view, listen, and explore their favorite digital content with relative ease. From its home page, one can subscribe, buy, and access full-colored interactive magazines such as Vanity Fair, Wired, and GQ, over 100,000 movies and commercial-free TV shows, 17 million songs, and Kindle tested applications and games – all from a single store: Amazon. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg; Bibliophile would surely love Amazon Kindle’s selection of over 1 million e-books and more than 1000 fully illustrated children’s book for sale, and over 2 million more pre-1923 books for free. Kindle Fire also comes with other freebies like free cloud storage courtesy of Amazon Cloud, a month’s subscription of Amazon Prime, and Amazon’s new revolutionary cloud-accelerated browser – Amazon Silk. This exclusive browser, backed by Amazon Web Services and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, boasts powerful back end computing, persistent connection, page indexing, machine learning, and faster loading times.

The Amazon Kindle Fire is the third smallest Kindle; it’s bigger than Kindle and Kindle Touch and yet smaller than Kindle Keyboard and Kindle DX. It merely measures 7.5 x 4.7 inches – small enough to fit inside a purse or be held in one hand. This tablet is powered by a dual core processor and comes with 8GB internal storage, the largest among other models. A USB 2.0 port is included for connectivity, data transfers, and charging. Top mounted stereo speakers provide the audio but it can still be expanded via the 3.5 mm standard audio jack.
Kindle Fire loses out to the earlier Kindle models only in terms of battery life, the latter can last up to three weeks and even up to two months while the former, with its high resolution colored multi-touchscreen, can only sustain continuous reading for up to 8 hours and movie playback up to 7.5 hours. That aside, Amazon’s Kindle Fire is probably one of the most promising tablets out there that can easily stand on its own in a sea of branded eBooks readers, tablet PCs, and iPad wannabes.

Barnes & Noble’s The All New NOOK, The Simple Touch Reader

Just when iPad releases a big leap from iPad to iPad 2, Barnes & Noble recently introduced the All New NOOK, The Simple Touch Reader. This latest addition to the NOOK product line is designed not just to follow the success of the NOOK 1st Edition™ but claims to be the easiest-to-use, most optimized, and dedicated reading device ever created.

The All New NOOK merely weighs 7.48 ounces and 35 percent lighter and 15 percent thinner than NOOK Wi-Fi 1st Edition™. Combine these with the soft-touch back and contoured ergonomic design, you can enjoy reading with just the use of one hand even for longer hours. With Wi-Fi off, you can read up to 2 months with a single charge. That is twice as long as other eReaders in the market today. Additionally, using the expandable memory slot, it can hold up to 1,000 eBooks so you can have your favorite digital or personal contents anywhere you go minus the weight. The All New NOOK can easily fit in a pocket, purse, jacket, or backpack. Taking advantage of touch technology, a simple tap to The All New NOOK’s 6-inch touchscreen offers simple navigation – font size and style adjustment, highlighting passages, and word searches can be done by typing on the responsive on-screen keyboard which appears only when you need it.

Moreover, Barnes & Noble uses the latest-generation E Ink screen and proprietary technology that lessens flashing to 80 percent while turning pages, scrolling the library or browsing digital contents. Aside from ultra fast page turns through touchscreen, the Fast Page™ feature allows pressing and holding the side button to quickly scan through content and skip right to the preferred section.

Flexbook – A Concept Device Offering Portable, Multi-use Computing

Flexible keyboards are now getting more and more popular and the reason for that are obvious. For one, since they are made of soft silicone, such keyboards are highly portable and they are said to be more durable than traditional keyboards. They are also more user-friendly since they offer a more natural feel. Now, there’s a concept device that will sure catch your interest – the ‘flexbook’. Made by Taiwan-based designer named Hao-Chun-Huang, the ‘flexbook’ offers not just flexible keyboard but also portable, multi-use computing in just a single device.

This concept device features a waterproof keypad plus 21:9 screen. Its flexible structure includes a center joint so the laptop can be folded to a wide range of configurations. With its 180-degree swivel touch screen, you can enjoy different configurations of viewing, which include tablet and laptop mode. The device can be folded as a book if you’re reading e-books; it can be a tablet if you need it for browsing newspapers. You can even use it as a laptop for use when making typed documents. It is also very portable as it serves as its very own case when you fold it in half.

And for those who want to make their gadgets an extension of their personality by customizing them. It will be good news that the ‘flexbook’ is customizable with the availability of rubber skins that are easily swappable. The designer envisions these skins to be available for purchase online and users can choose the colors and patterned textures they want. Since it is yet a concept device, you can look for related products such as flexible keyboard at Amazon.
