Volkswagen Bik.e Concept: Green Mobility Anytime, Anywhere

The green movement has already invaded the auto industry. These days, all the newest automotive innovations seem to revolve around being “green”. Hybrid vehicles have suddenly become the new trend. It’s not surprising, then, to see manufacturers also turn their attention to two-wheel mobility when it comes to their green innovations. Volkswagen has done just that with its introduction of the Volkswagen Bik.e concept at the Auto China 2010.

The Volkswagen Bik.e is an electric bicycle powered by a motor that you only need to charge. It looks like all other normal bicycles you’ll see in the streets today, save for the absence of a pedal. It’s ideal for use in urban areas, as a substitute to your car whenever you find the need to park it somewhere far from your actual destination (blame the increasing number of vehicles and the limited parking space available), or if you just want a ride that will help you maneuver easily through traffic (all thanks to the Bik.e’s small size). Featuring a top speed of 12.5 miles per hour, the said bicycle can travel up to 12.5 miles.

This new Volkswagen product packs together environmental friendliness, practicality, and style into a sleek innovation that you can store in your spare tire compartment. When not in use, you can fold it down easily into a flat disc, place it in the compartment for your spare tire, and then carry it with you wherever you go.

The Bik.e is the very first two-wheel drive from Volkswagen. Right now, it’s still just a concept innovation, though hopefully, it will be in the market soon. If you want something similar, you can find an electric bicycle at Amazon.

Go Old School With The New Version of the Famous Penny Farthing Bike

Also called “ordinary” or “high” bicycle, Penny Farthing is an early model of bicycle that’s largely produced in the U.S. and England in the mid to late 19th century. The very first model is invented in 1871 by a British engineer named James Starley. This is the world’s first efficient bicycle with a small rear wheel and a large front wheel that pivots in a simple tubular frame. The pedals are directly mounted to the front wheel and its tires are made up of rubber. With this bicycle, people can get around cobblestone streets faster than walking.

If you want to go old school or you’re looking for a gift for your cyclist dad, an accurate replica of the full-size Penny Farthing bicycle is perfect. This replica comes with a 36 inches front wheel and 12 inches rear wheel to give you the classic elevated position that’s associated with such bikes. What sets these new versions apart from their predecessors are the modern safety standards any bike should have. Among such are anti-slip pedals, a brake on the rear wheel, and a spring suspension that will make your ride a bit smoother.

The new version of Penny Farthing bike comes with a frame that’s made up of durable steel. They are ideal for your relaxing bike rides every Sunday and for any event when you need to look unique in the group of cyclists. Burn Fat Intelligently with Pedal Brain

New year is coming and you should be ready. I know you have created a new year’s resolution list and I also know that burning that winter fat is included in the list. No one can really blame you on that because everybody loves eating during the holidays especially when it is so cold outside, you don’t have anything else to do but to sit down on the couch and chow down with whatever your taste buds crave.

While this scenario is inevitable, you might want to try biking to wage the war against the pounds. For one, biking is a good cardiovascular exercise and it gets you to different places which is a good way to get some fresh air. For a better workout, Pedal Brain is a good investment to start. Pedal Brain is an integrated device that monitors your workout and also a coaching platform. By monitoring your workout, you can see how many calories you have burned, your heart rate and so on using your existing ANT+ sensors. But it doesn’t end at monitoring since the coaching platform can recommend what you should do for your ride like how many minutes would you go, when to rest, when to power pedal. Like a real coach, the Pedal Brain tracks your trail using the built-in GPS on your iPhone. The collected data can be uploaded to the web app and also on your Twitter or Facebook account so your friends can see your progress.

It is really nice that products such as this allow people to know their performance and analyze it to gain better and significant results.

Put your Pedal on the Metal the Eco Friendly Way with Hybrid2 System

hybrid bike
Hitting two birds with one stone might not be the best saying for an eco warrior but it would be the best way to describe the genius behind the concept Hybrid2 bike rental system. The idea is simple yet ingenious. First, rent a hybrid bicycle then the bike will generate and store kinetic energy while in use. Second, return the bike in a designated special station, which in turn will transfer the “collected” energy to the city grid. This means cleaner air, less traffic congestion, good exercise and best of all credits to your next bus pass – for going places beyond your stamina to pedal your way through.
hybrid bike stationVisionary and designer Chiyu Chen and his regenerative bicycle braking system called “Hybrake” are the core of this system. Hybrake gathers kinetic energy generated from cycling and braking then saves it in an ultra capacitor. The more you use the bike the more credits you’ll be given to use on other forms of public transportation. These credits will be stored in your personal ID cards to be used as bus passes.

Solar powered bike stands with RFID card readers for locking and unlocking bikes also envisioned by the inventor. A single bike may not be a  significant contribution to the grid as to light a bulb, but imagine a green city with a fleet of Hybrid2 system. The whole design forms a smart grid offering clean and renewable if not a bit tiring source of energy.

Now, if you want to have your own hybrid bike, you can always find a great selection here.
