13-inch MacBook Air vs. 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina

For many years now, computer manufacturers have been trying to create the perfect computer that balances power and portability. From laptops and notebooks to netbooks and tablets, newer computers are getting smaller and smaller. However, only a few really succeed in packing a significant amount of power in a portable package. Apple is one company that has shown success and promise in this regard as it continues to release powerful products that boast of portability.

Its MacBook Air has become a favorite among users who have found its MacBook Pro powerful but not really portable. And for a while, MacBook Air enjoyed the attention. That is, until the MacBook Pro with Retina Display was introduced – more powerful that the Air but almost as thin. So which should you go for?

MBP retinaPortability

When it comes to the size and weight of these two devices, there really isn’t that much of a difference. MacBook Air remains lighter (2.96 lbs) compared to the MBP with Retina (3.57 lbs). In terms of size, Air is also thinner (17.3mm compared to the MBP, which is 19.1mm in thickness), although it is a bit wider and longer (325mm x 227mm compared to the MBP, which measures 314mm by 219mm).

The MacBook Pro with Retina is still the winner here. For one, its Intel Core i5 chip is still faster. Its RAM is also bigger (even double) – 8gb. However, what really makes the MBP stand out here is, as its name implies, its 2,560 x 1,600 display. Imagine it as a hundred extra pixels per inch, creating very smooth icons on your screen and very crisp images and texts.

MB AirPrice

This is where a huge difference can be seen. The MacBook Pro with Retina has a starting price of $1499, $300 more than the starting price of the MacBook Air ($1199). Upgrades and higher specs will cost you even more. For instance, you can get a Core i7 processor upgrade if you want faster operation. The standard storage available for both devices is 128gb. If you need bigger storage, you have an option to get the 256gb. And if you need optical drive, you will need to spend more money because both of these don’t have one.

Now the question: which should you go for?

Given that both of them are portable, thin and lightweight, the two biggest differences that you’ll need to consider will be their performance and their price.

So what are you going to use your device for? The MBP with Retina is perfect for people who work on high-res graphics and those who do a lot of video editing. The Retina display will surely be of great help to your work. Meanwhile, the MacBook Air is ideal for other non-power-demanding activities. Its portable design is ideal for being a travel companion

And as to the question in terms of price, well that would depend on whether you’re willing to pay a few hundred dollars for the features that the MacBook Pro with Retina has. Our suggestion would be: if you really need those features, then go ahead and spend. But, if you don’t have any particular or serious need for those, skip the extra dollars and go for the MacBook Air. Once you’ve decided which to get, you can check Google Store to find your needed device.

Google Glass vs. Apple iWatch: The Battle for Wearable Technology is On

The newest technologies of Google and Apple have created a buzz way earlier than the actual release of the said technologies. And now that the news is out, everyone’s looking forward to what is predicted as the new products set to bring a whole new level of revolution in the way we interact with and use technology. Let’s take a look at these newest gadgets, the Google Glass and Apple iWatch, and the features that are about to change the technological industry.

iwatch What They Are

When you look at these two products at their basic level, they’re a simple eyeglass and a watch that’s incorporated with various technologies. You can look at them as supercomputers in a wearable package.

How They Are Designed

Google Glass is a voice-activated display mounted into an eyeglass. The entire technology can be found in the top right portion of the device. It is built with a rocker button on its right frame, which offers a second option for controlling it (next to voice command). It also comes in different colors: charcoal, tangerine, cotton, sky, and shale.

Meanwhile, not much can be said right now as to the final design of the Apple iWatch, except that it’s a future-looking piece of gadget that looks much like a modern watch and can perform a whole range of functions.

How They Work and What They Offer

Google Glass is powered by Android OS and, through your voice, can perform a wide range of actions: take photos, record live events (and share them), send messages, and even work as GPS. It can provide your needed information (all you have to do is ask), as well as translate foreign language.

The Apple iWatch is iOS-operated and can sync to your Smartphone through Bluetooth. It can work with Siri, will allow you to control the music on your phone, and can even have health tracking features. Like the Glass, it has GPS, too.

Some of those features, however, are just expectations at the moment (especially those for the iWatch). More or less, those are what you’ll find in these devices, and we can expect more improvements in the months or years to come.

So Which Is The Cooler Wearable Tech?

When it comes to fashion and style, the Apple iWatch takes the cake. To start with, the iWatch will be easier to incorporate in one’s wardrobe than the Glass. The Glass will remind you of its presence the whole time you wear it, whereas the iWatch can be worn and forgotten, until you need to use it. When it comes to technology, though, Google Glass is way more advance. So do you want the latest technology, or do you want a technology that you can wear comfortably? Whichever of the two you choose, you have various choices at Geekie Store.

Music on the Go: iPod Shuffle or Sansa Clip?

For a long time now, Apple has been taking the larger share of the technology market with its various devices. In the mini audio arena, its iPod shuffle has long been king because of its compact size and its portability. But, the arrival of SanDisk’s Sansa Clip has posed a great challenge to this device. Some Apple users have become new Sansa Clip users while other loyalists continue to swear by the Shuffle. So, let’s take a look at these two competing gadgets and see if the Shuffle really has competition with the Sansa Clip or if Apple users will do well to stick by their gadget.

The Exterior

Apple’s iPod Shuffle is the more compact of the two devices. It can be placed inside your pocket or clipped on the sleeve of your shirt if you use it when you run—it won’t be a bother. Meanwhile, SanDisk’s Sansa Clip is longer and thicker, and it has a screen. If you’re a visual person, you’ll love being able to adjust your playlist on the go through the screen of the device. The Shuffle makes up for this with its Voice Over feature, which speaks the names of songs, artists, and playlists to help you navigate.

In terms of looks, the Shuffle takes the crown because it’s sleek and sexy. Its anodized aluminum construction gives it a coveted look. It also gets the same plus points when it comes to durability. It is very durable and can survive drops and immersion in water. Its build quality is supreme, and it’s almost indestructible.

sansa clipThe Interior

Both the iPod Shuffle and Sansa Clip offers benefits in various aspects here, but it looks like the Clip has a lot more to offer. First, it supports more file formats than the shuffle. It supports FLAC and various other music and audio book file formats. Second, it is compatible with more operating systems, and it simplifies managing your audio files, compared to Shuffle which relies heavily on iTunes when it comes to such things as music transfer. Meanwhile, while the Shuffle is almost limited to iTunes, the Sansa Clip has Zune, Rhapsody, and Napster. When it comes to sound quality, the Sansa Clip also wins. Although the Shuffle sounds good, the Clip has a much more dynamic sound quality.

Memory and Battery

The Sansa Clip takes the cake in this aspect because it has bigger internal memory (up to 8gb compared to the Shuffle’s 2gb). Even better than that, the Clip also comes with a slot for micro SDHC card—it’s expandable to up to 32gb! When it comes to battery life, the Sansa Clip and the Shuffle make a tie because they both have a battery life of up to 15 hours.

Features and Price

The Sansa Clip has several features that you won’t find in a Shuffle. It has an FM radio, a voice recorder, and a workout timer. Meanwhile, the Shuffle has more accessories available in the market, and this is one of the things Apple users find appealing. Price is one thing that causes a stir. The Clip is way cheaper than the Shuffle. And with its more features, no wonder some Apple users are crossing to the other side.

Our Say:

Looking at the overall picture, the Sansa Clip actually excels in many aspects. Sound quality, flexibility in terms of use, visuals—it wins. But, when it comes to looks, size, and durability, the Shuffle has no competition here. The price, though, can make a big difference. If you’re willing to pay more for a longer life and for the Apple comfort that many people have come to love, and if you don’t need the extra features of the Clip, then go for the Shuffle. If, however, you want more function at a less price, the Sansa Clip is the way to go.

Side by Side: Comparing the iPad 3 and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9”

If you’re a big reader and are searching for the right tablet to store all of your books, so to speak, the search shouldn’t be difficult. After all, there are only a few

tablets out there that are worth considering. For a long time, Apple has dominated the market with its iPad, but Amazon has recently entered the scene and changed the playing field with its Kindle. Now the question: should you go for the trusted stability and features of Apple, or should you risk it with the various offers and the cheaper price of the new Amazon gadgets? Find out in this article as we compare Apple’s latest, the iPad 3, and the newest Kindle tablet, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9”.
ipad 3

Dimensions and Looks

When you compare the latest Kindle Fire and the iPad 3 side by side, you’ll notice that the latter is longer (by 0.05 inch), wider (by 0.81 inch), and thicker (by 0.2 inch).  It is also heavier (1.44 pounds compared to the Fire HD’s 1.25 pounds). This combination of measurement and weight is a factor that you may want to consider, especially if you plan to take the gadget with you anywhere

you go. The newest Kindle Fire is available only in black color while the newest iPad is offered in silver/black and silver/white.

Going deeper into the hardware and software of these two devices, you will find Android 4.0 behind the Kindle Fire HD 8.9” and iOS 5.1 powering the iPad 3. The iPad 3 still has better resolution and an advantage when it comes to graphics. However, whatever the new Fire lacks in this aspect, it makes up for when it comes to sound quality. It features better sound with its dual stereo speaker and its Dolby Digital Plus technology, a real edge over iPad 3’s single mono speaker. Both gadgets offer excellent video chat capability. But while both of them have a front-facing camera for this, only the iPad 3 has a rear-facing camera. So if you plan a reading-taking photos combo in your gadget, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9” may not be convenient to use.

After checking the specs and figures, we take a look at what awaits you once you get any of these gadgets. Both of them actually offer certain perks. Undeniably, Apple’s iOS 5.1 gives the iPad 3 access to more apps (up to 500,00). However, Amazon also has a lot in store for the Kindle Fire consumers. Among the most appealing are the Prime (which offers free movies) and the Kindle Lending Library (free reads!). These features may have some limitations outside US, but US residents will surely love these.

This is what really causes debate among fanatics—the price difference between the two gadgets is big. Price differs in terms of the feature/s incorporated in the device: WiFi only, 4G only, or both WiFi and 4G. When you look at the overall comparison, though, it’s easy to notice that the Fire HD 8.9” is cheaper by $200; its price is closer to that of the smaller 7-inch tablets. The only question that you have to answer is: does this amount equate to real value when you look at the features of the two devices? If you think it does, then the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ wins. One thing, though: the newest Kindle Fire comes with ‘Special Offers’ ads from Amazon (one thing that’s optional in previous models but comes standard in the newest Fire). However, if you don’t want them, you have the option to have them removed for $15.

Our Recommendations

If you’re a new user who wants to save some bucks, then there’s no question there: the new Kindle Fire HD 8.9” is for you. It’s also perfect if you plan to use your tablet mainly for reading. However, if you will be using your gadget for other activities that require the need for and use of more apps, then you may want to go for the iPad 3. This is also recommended for those who have already tried previous iPad models (and have loved what Apple has to offer) and are only looking to upgrade.
