Flip on over to the dry side

I love the rainy season. Not the typhoon kind but those drizzles that make the flowers all sparkly and bright. After a light rain shower, I usually take a walk out and enjoy dewdrops on the grass. Only problem is, I always have a hard time finding a dry place to sit on.

Fortunately, a bunch of Korean designers have come up with The Rolling Bench. From the name itself you guessed what this can do. After the rain, you simply turn the lever found on the side and you’ll soon find yourself happily sitting on the dry side of the bench. Amazing!

I do have a few questions boggling my mind. First, if the rain is a bit on the heavy side like a typhoon, will the underside get wet? I saw ridges on the bench and I hope those will prevent water from dripping below therefore still keeping it safe and dry. Second, there is a brake on this thing right? I’d hate to see myself or someone slide down all of a sudden and break their back. Nonetheless, despite my silly questions, it’s a brilliant design.

Let’s just hope a punk kid won’t come running your way and crank that lever and you’ll end up flat on your butt.

i-LIMB: Bionic Hand

Superheroes have a lot of advantages over us; they can fly, they are very strong, some of them are invincible and some can even see through walls. Although a superhero isn’t real (though some may just be in hiding), there are people who can be considered as such and one of them is David Gow.

Mr. Gow is the brilliant designer and inventor of i-LIMB, a bionic hand created to aid people who are not as fortunate as most of us who have complete limbs. His invention has won the top prize in UK’s engineering contest.

To be able to test his creation further, he asked Mr. Ray Edwards, CEO of the Limbless Association if he would be willing to fit the i-LIMB and see how it works.

The i-LIMB works just like a normal hand that can grip things without any difficulty. It has sensors to “feel” what the arm muscle wants it to do and serves it purpose quite well.

If you want to see the wonder that is i-LIMB, head on to the Science Museum of London and see how this bionic hand helps ordinary people, like you and me, just like your favorite superheroes.

Jetsons watch out, we’ll soon be more advanced than you!

Haven’t you always wanted to fly when you were a kid and feel the wind on your face? Or maybe be like George Jetson and his family and zoom around everywhere with just a push of a button? Now, you probably can.

Glenn Martin has designed a jet pack that may sound a  little weird if you call it that because this “jet pack” has no jet. This invention runs even without those rocket-like afterburners we see in most movies that launches people high up in the air. Think Wile. E. Coyote with a whoosh but without those flames that burns his butt.

This jet pack, let’s just call it as so okay people, utilizes two 200 horsepower fans which runs on gasoline. Since it uses gas, you can just imagine how loud this thing can be.

Glenn said that this jet pack may be the most safest one out there because it doesn’t have blazing afterburners plus, it has its own parachute tucked away inside to give the user a more confident and safer flying time.

Hopefully, it will be mass produced soon and we’ll all be flying and zooming in the air like carefree children. Of course, traffic signs and lights still have to be installed to prevent people, who have been drinking and flying, from crashing into one another.

Oh and you need to have $250,000 to avail this baby. Anyone kind enough to lend me some moolah?

Tai-robot-kun blends in with the sea

For a long time, we have explored the vast, deep blue sea and have discovered a lot of things we thought could never exist. However, it is always better to really blend in with the ocean while learning more about the creatures found in the watery world.

A brilliant engineer from the University of Kitakyushu, Japan, Professor Ikuo Yamamoto has designed a robotic fish that looks like the real thing, sans the fishy smell and the slippery scales. The Tai-robot-kun is a 15.4-pound robotic Red Snapper fish that has the ability to swim underwater for about an hour once its battery has been fully charged. It acts like a submarine as it depends on a weight system to determine its depth and resilience.

Since it looks realistic with its silicon covered body(see photo above), it was able to capture the beautiful world submerged in water without scaring the sea creatures , except for those small fish who automatically run away from fish that looks like Sea Bream.

When you get the chance to dive in the seas of Japan, make sure to look out for Tai-robot-kun and be wary of bigger fish who might try to eat him—or you.
