Voodoo Firefly: HP’s Conceptual Notebook

Looking at it now, it’s like they took the whole Nintendo DS look and tweaked it to cater to hardcore notebook enthusiasts. Ok, so you might still be scratching your head because of the whole dual-screen idea but this conceptual device developed by Hewlett-Packard takes most of the traditional elements of a notebook and throws it out the window. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not, but judging from the specs of this baby, it’s guaranteed to turn some heads. Boasting a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 4 GB of RAM, a 250 GB hard drive with 7,200 RPM, and two ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 GPUs set up in CrossFire mode, it’s enough to say that it’s pretty high-end. Some gaming notebooks can only dream of matching the performance of this powerhouse.
What traditional elements did they alter? Well, there’s the multi-touch trackpad that they placed on the side instead of the bottom of the keyboard where it’s usually situated. Users won’t be left in the dark because it has a backlit keyboard and a webcam with a built-in night vision enhancement. It’s a Firefly, indeed.
Now let’s talk about the second screen. At 4.3 inches wide, almost the same size as a business card, this screen has an 800×480 resolution and would probably be used in instant messenger applications. If they’ll think outside the box, maybe software developers can utilize this screen for many other uses aside from the aforementioned IM. I don’t think it was put there just to make the whole thing look pretty.
There’s still no news about production, but with the amount of buzz they’re getting I think we’ll eventually see the Firefly’s brilliance in the near future.
