Notching 3.5 stars, Lenovo’s original IdeaPad S10 was a solid netbook, but, it had its drawbacks, including a cramped keyboard and a standard three-cell battery. Lenovo admits its shortcomings and fixed both of those main issues in its new IdeaPad S10-2 – expanding the keyboard to 90 percent of the size of a standard keyboard and battery life is up to 6 hours, with “battery-saving software†helping the S10-2 reach a 30 percent longer battery life than its predecessor.
The touch pad is also larger and there have been some port changes, too – dropping the ExpressCard 34 slot and replacing it with a third USB 2.0 socket. Lenovo also made the IdeaPad S10-2 netbook thinner and lighter than the previous IdeaPad S10 netbook and new patterned design on the lids are offered: white, black, pink, or gray. Users choosing models with 3G connectivity will also be treated to Dolby headphone technology – 5.1 channels of sound provide a surround-sound experience.
But expect similar performance to the first IdeaPad S10 with the S10-2 because things under the hood didn’t get much alteration. Yes, you’ll find the same 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, plus the quick-launch pre-Windows OS and VeriFace facial-recognition software. Other features include 4-in-1 card reader, VGA and audio in/out ports. And oh, by the way, all versions of the S10-2 will come standard with a six-cell battery and will run from $349 to $399.
Though the S10-2 was a minor update to the original S10, it doesn’t mean that it’s not worth a look for those in the market for a 10-inch netbook.
