One of the most exciting transportation development s in recent years has been the ongoing series of Personal Mobility devices we’ve seen from Toyota. It began with the PM, was followed by the i-unit and i-swing concepts. And we’ve seen these growths with the similar discovery of mobility, partner, and guide robots as Toyota has surged to become the world’s largest automotive manufacturer. Now, the next chapter in this exciting mobility series is here – with the promise of commercialization drawing close. And it looks like it “carves!†Yes, it tilts into a corner in the same way a motorcycle does!
What I’m talking about is the i-REAL – a personal mobility vehicle made closely in human scale representing the next stage of Toyota’s personal mobility vehicle development. The i-REAL uses three wheels (two at the front and one at the back), in low-speed mode, shortening its wheelbase to allow it to move naturally among pedestrians at similar eyesight height without taking up a large amount of space. In high-speed mode, the wheelbase lengthens to provide a lower center of gravity and better driving performance.
Toyota says the i-REAL ensures safe handling [both to the driver and those around the vehicle] by employing perimeter monitoring sensors to detect whenever a collision with a person or object is imminent. It alerts the driver through noise and vibrations and alerts people around it of its movements through the use of light and sound.
So, would you want to ride one of these on the highway? Or would you still prefer the traditional three-wheel vehicles?
